‘People Like Me Don’t Get Support’: Autistic Adults’ Experiences of Support and Treatment for Mental Health Difficulties, Self-Injury and Suicidality
Camm-Crosbie, Bradley, Shaw, Baron-Cohen and Cassidy (2018)
Autistic people face a high risk of mental health issues, self-injury, and suicidality, yet their experiences with treatment and support have been largely unstudied. A survey of 200 autistic adults revealed that tailored, individualised care is both beneficial and urgently needed, with key barriers including poor access, lack of understanding from professionals, and inadequate or harmful treatment. The findings highlight the critical need for autism-informed pathways within mental health services.
