Understanding of co-occurring psychiatric issues in ADHD adults is vital for supporting these conditions. This literature review and meta-analysis focuses on large studies (>10 000 participants) to explore the overall, sex and age-specific relationship of anxiety disorders, major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder and substance use disorder in ADHD adults compared to their Neurotypical counterparts. The second aspect of the literature review was to describe the methodological challenges connected to establishing co-occurring conditions in ADHD adults. The findings show there was a strong difference in ADHD adults compared to those who did not have ADHD. Whilst some differences were seen between genders, the was insufficient data on life stages to draw conclusions on age and co-occurring conditions. The article concludes with discussion of methodological challenges, knowledge gaps and future research.
