Exploring the Experiences of Autistic Transgender and Non-Binary Adults in Seeking Gender Identity Healthcare

This article addresses a gap in the literature surrounding Autistic Transgender and Non-Binary adults’ experiences accessing gender identity health care. 17 participants were given semi-structured interviews. A reflexive thematic analysis was carried out by a team including Autistic and Transgender researchers. The findings of the study showed that professionals had poor knowledge of Autism and limited communication methods. There were issues around misdiagnosis of mental health difficulties, there were also accessibility issues and bureaucratic and economic barriers. Participants stated difficulties with unclear processes, standardization of care, lengths of waiting lists and inaccessible or confusing insurance. The authors conclude by stressing the need for better training for providers and professionals around Autistic people's experiences.
