Despite government efforts to reduce the number of autistic people and those with intellectual disabilities in mental health hospitals, many still face long stays with little helpful treatment. These hospital stays can cause trauma due to restrictive care and delayed discharge. This article uses four cases to show the problems in the current system and highlights the importance of listening and working closely with individuals to create personalised support, helping them return to life in their communities. It also offers recommendations for better care so these people can live normal lives at home with proper support.
