Toward Understanding and Enhancing Self-Determination: A Qualitative Exploration with Autistic Adults without Co-Occurring Intellectual Disability
Thompson-Hodgetts, Ryan, Coombs, Brown, Xavier, Devlin, Lee, Kedmy and Borden (2023)
This study explored what self-determination means to autistic adults and how they want to be supported in making their own choices. Autistic participants said self-determination means having the freedom and support to make decisions without being controlled by others. They shared that barriers like discrimination and difficulties with executive functioning often get in the way. They want support that respects their unique needs, helps them be their true selves, and promotes a more inclusive, accepting society free from stigma.
