Arnold, Bruce, Weise, Mills, Trollor and Coxon (2023)

With a focus on Australian Autistic Adults this research explores barriers to accessing healthcare. Using a subtle realism perspective the authors conducted a cross-sectional investigation into healthcare barriers. 263 Autistic adults and 70 non-Autistic adults completed the Barriers to Healthcare Checklist Short-Form. Autistic adults reported more barriers (4.58) than non-Autistic adults (0.76). Regression modelling showed gender diversity, higher levels of generalised anxiety, greater global disability and less satisfaction with social support were key barriers to accessing healthcare. The authors suggest co-designing support with Autistic adults which advocates for their needs is a vital step to removing these barriers.
